GDYO to receive Major Gift from the E. F. von Seggern Charitable Foundation Trust to establish the Chuck Moore Student Enrichment Fund
The E. F. von Seggern Charitable Foundation Trust will give a major gift of $300,000 to the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra (GDYO) in order to provide an ongoing scholarship and outreach fund. As requested by directors of the von Seggern Foundation, the Fund will be named for Chuck Moore who served for 25 years as the Executive Director of GDYO. Mr. Moore retired in 2016.
“We are all so thrilled and honored by the support of the von Seggern Foundation,” said Executive Director Cathy Hernandez. “The funds will allow GDYO to reach more young musicians from the inner-city and provide them with high quality music education and performance opportunities that they would not otherwise be able to access because of financial or other barriers. The Fund will be housed at the Texas Presbyterian Foundation.”
Von Seggern was a Nebraska farm girl who took several business courses in Omaha and wound up in Dallas during the Depression. She and a friend started a company that became a major supplier of heavy equipment to oil producers and other industries. Von Seggern passed away in 1995. The Foundation, which plans to complete the distribution of all its funds within this calendar year, has been a very strong supporter of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra for more than two decades.
“This gift will be a lasting reminder of Elsa’s extraordinary generosity and, I hope, will inspire others to give back to the arts in their local community,” said Cathy Hernandez. “The GDYO staff and board are committed to the organization’s mission of providing music education and performance opportunities for youth with demonstrated musical ability, and this gift will allow us to share the benefits and joy of studying an instrument and playing in an ensemble with more young musicians.”
