GDYO

The GDYO is the most advanced orchestral ensemble in the program. A full symphony orchestra, it is comprised of 110 string, woodwind, brass and percussion players who are high school seniors or younger.

Students in this ensemble demonstrate mastery of their instrument including advanced technique the ability to play musically in many styles and have significant prior orchestra experience.

This ensemble rehearses Sunday’s during the season from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Sammons Center for the Arts

Philharmonic

Comprised of approximately 100 members, high school seniors or younger, the Philharmonic is a full symphony orchestra. 

Students this ensemble demonstrate mastery of the instrument including advanced techniques and an ability to play musical in many styles. Students have prior orchestra or band experience.

This ensemble rehearses Sunday’s during the season from 1:45 – 4:15 p.m. at the Sammons Center for the Arts

Wind Symphony

The Wind Symphony is an ensemble of 55 to 60 wind, brass and percussion players who are high school seniors or younger. Students in this ensemble demonstrate mastery of their instrument including advanced techniques and the ability to play musically in multiple styles.  Students have significant prior band experience.

This ensemble rehearses Sunday’s during the season from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on the campus of the University of North Texas

Sinfonietta

With approximately 30 total violin, viola, cello and bass players, Sinfonietta members experience a heightened sense of the importance of each part and individual musician. Sinfonietta members are 11th grade or younger.

Students in the Sinfonietta are highly competent in their abilities being comfortable with vibrato, shifting and multiple positions on their instrument.  Students are comfortable with multiple types of bowing.

Dallas String Ensemble

The DSE consists of approximately 50 string players (violin, viola, cello and bass), all ninth graders or younger. Musicians encounter complex rhythms and begin to explore the interaction between various harmonies and melodies.

Students have a good understanding of their instrument and are comfortable with some shifting and beginning vibrato.

Young Performers Orchestra

Members of the YPO are seventh graders and younger. This ensemble currently consists of 50 string players (violin, viola, cello and bass) and is the first ensemble experience for many of its members. Students have taken lessons or played in their school orchestra for a year or two and should be comfortable with some shifting.

Flute Choir

The Flute Choir is made of of approximately 14 flutists, who are high school seniors and younger. Made of up students that have competency on the flute anda desire to work with all instruments in the flute family.

GDYO Jazz

The focus of GDYO Jazz is to provide a comprehensive jazz program focusing on large ensemble playing, music theory and small combos.

Players in the both the GDYO Jazz Orchestra and GDYO Jazz combo are high school seniors or younger. They demonstrate a mastery of their instrument and a solid understanding of keys signatures and chords as they relate to jazz.

Chamber Ensemble Showcase

The GDYO Chamber Ensemble Showcase it opens to all current members of a GDYO Ensemble who are high school students (9-12).
Chamber groups may be made from any ensemble and make include students outside of the GDYO as long as 50% or more of the ensemble is in a GDYO Ensemble.
