GDYO Jazz Audition Information

What instruments are we looking for?  Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Vibraphone, Bass (upright encouraged), Drum set.

what to expect at the audition

  • All GDYO auditions are held at the Sammons Center for the Arts (3630 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas TX 75219)

Horn applicants (Trumpet, Trombone, Alto, Tenor, & Baritone Saxophone) Should be prepared to perform the following: 

  • One Solo Work of their choice (without accompaniment) Please make this piece a jazz piece. This can be a transcribed solo or other jazzy work
  • Possible sight-reading
  • A jazz chart of our choosing.  On this chart we will ask you to play the head.
  • If you wish to be considered for the combo we would also like you to solo over the changes

Piano, Vibraphone and Guitar applicants should be prepared to perform the following: 

  • One Solo Work of their choice (without accompaniment) Please make this piece a jazz piece. This can be a transcribed solo or other jazzy work
  • Possible sight-reading
  • A jazz chart of our choosing.  On this chart we will ask you to play the head and comp the changes.
  • If you wish to be considered for the combo we would also like you to solo over the changes.
  • (Note for Vibraphone: Comping the changes on the chart is optional)

Bass applicants should be prepared to perform the following:

  • One Solo Work of their choice (without accompaniment) Please make this piece a jazz piece. This can be a transcribed solo or other jazzy work
  • Possible sight-reading
  • A jazz chart of our choosing.  On this chart we will ask you to play the head and walk the changes.
  • If you wish to be considered for the combo we would also like you to solo over the changes

Drum set applicants should be prepared to perform the following:

  • A Jazz Chart of our choosing. It is your responsibility to interpret what is on the page.
  • Possible sight-reading
  • We would also like to hear a variety of grooves, including, but not limited to:
    • medium swing (on Ride and on HH)
    • uptempo bop. (tempo 200+)
    • brushes ballad
    • jazz waltz (medium tempo)
    • samba
    • Bossa

What to expect at the audition

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic we have made the decision to not have live auditions this year and instead request video auditions.

Because of this the we are slightly modifying the jazz audition to include a downloadable backing track for applicants.

Please refer to each instrument group below for updated audition requirements and recording order.

1. The jazz chart “Big Dipper”. Available for download on this page. We would like you to play the head only.

2. One Solo Work of your choice (without accompaniment) Please make this piece a jazz piece. This can be a transcribed solo or other jazzy work. The length of this solo should not exceed 5 minutes.

3. Improvise over the backing track. The backing track needs to be heard on the recording.

Piano, Vibraphone and Guitar applicants should record the following, in this order:

1. The jazz chart “Big Dipper”. Available for download on this page. We would like you to play the head only.

2. One Solo Work of your choice (without accompaniment) Please make this piece a jazz piece. This can be a transcribed solo or other jazzy2. work. The length of this solo should not exceed 5 minutes.

4. Comp/walk the changes on the backing track.  The backing track needs to be heard on the recording.

 

Drum set applicants should record the following, in this order:

1. The Jazz Chart “Big Dipper”. Available for download on this page. It is your responsibility to interpret what is on the page.

2. Play time over the backing track two times, with at least two contrasting styles. Backing track needs to be heard on the recording, even if soft.

3. Two to Four additional styles of your choice in 4 – 8 bar phrases.
Styles suggested, but not limited to:

  • medium swing (on Ride and on HH)
  • uptempo bop. (tempo 200+)
  • brushes ballad
  • jazz waltz (medium tempo)
  • samba
  • Bossa
