GDYO Concerto Competition

Prelims: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Finals: 4 – 6 p.m.

Specific times will be assigned

Prelim results will be emailed and posted by 3 p.m.

Applications will be accepted starting August 1, 2017

Competition Rules

  1. All members of GDYO are eligible to participate; except for performing winners from the previous season.
  2. Musicians may not audition on more than one instrument. They must audition on the instrument they perform on in the GDYO. Piano is excluded from this competition.
  3. The competition is divided into two categories:
    1. Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass)
    2. Winds/Percussion/Harp (everyone else)
  4. An accompanist is required to audition. You must provide your own accompanist
  5. Memorization is not required.
  6. Only one movement should be performed unless the movements are very short.
  7. The total playing time for any piece should not exceed 20 minutes.
  8. You must have the entire selection prepared to perform. Although the judge may stop you and ask you to skip ahead, please begin at the beginning of the piece and be prepared to play all of it.
  9. The two 1st place winners (one per category) will perform on the March 4, 2018 Meyerson concert with the GDYO. Second and third place winners will be invited to perform at the Extended Rehearsal on January 14 The winners may be invited to perform at local events.
  10. All performances and honorable mentions will be awarded at the discretion of the judges and on the basis of overall musicianship. The judges may choose not to designate a winner in either category.
  11. Participants may choose any repertoire, but it must have an orchestral accompaniment available for rent or purchase.
  12. You must notify Patrick if you wish to withdraw from the competition. All correspondence regarding and including this application can be sent to the office or turned in to the black box on the table at rehearsal after August 1.
