Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which orchestra should I apply for?
It may be helpful to read the descriptions on the orchestra sections of our website. You may also want to listen to each group. With your private teacher’s help, you should be able to make a decision. If you are still unsure, it is okay. You will be placed in the appropriate ensemble based on the abilities that you demonstrate in the audition.
In the YPO, DSE and Sinfonietta orchestras, there are age limitations set by school grade level. If you have skipped a grade in school or have any other special circumstance that may be a factor in your placement, please contact the GDYO office. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
2. Do I need to have my audition music memorized?
Memorization is not necessary.
3. Can I request an audition time/date?
If you apply early, there is a chance we can honor audition time and date requests. However, due to the judges' schedules, some instruments may only audition during certain times on certain dates.
4. When will I receive my audition time/ date?
The GDYO will mail a postcard to each applicant after the application deadline date. If you do not receive your postcard two weeks before the first scheduled audition date for your instrument, please call the GDYO office. Chances are, there has been a problem with the mail service. It is your responsibility to follow up with the GDYO office about securing an audition time.
5. Do I need to dress up for the audition?
Dressing up is not mandatory. Most people wear dressy-casual, comfortable clothes to the audition.
6. When do I apply for financial aid?
After you are accepted into one of the orchestras, please call the GDYO office to request a need-based financial aid form if you would like to apply for aid. Financial aid only covers the tuition (or a portion of the tuition); it does not cover the $25 application fee.
7. Is a picture necessary on the application?
A picture is helpful to us, but not mandatory.
8. When and how will I find out the results of the audition?
You will not receive any audition results over the phone or on the website. Letters containing audition results will be mailed after all auditions have concluded. Typically, the date of the mailing is advertised during auditions, so you know when to expect the letter. Under NO circumstances will results be given over the phone.
